Why I Give: Matt Covington

Matt Covington, a sales compensation design and planning consultant in Growth Operations at Colonial Life, gives blood to the American Red Cross because a small needle stick equals a rewarding and lifesaving experience.

Matt began donating blood a few years after graduating college and is always looking for new ways to maximize the impact. When he can, he gives Power Red donations, which help save the lives of trauma patients, newborns, and people with sickle cell anemia.

“Just over a year ago, a close family friend was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer – so you never know who might be the recipient of your donation,” Matt said. “I also started to give platelet donations because you can donate more often, and they’re used at a local hospital,” Matt said.

Platelets help your blood clot and are most often used by patients facing cancer and other life-threatening illnesses.

There’s always a need for blood, especially in the summer months when donations are lower. Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood, and your donation could potentially save up to three lives.

The American Red Cross facilitates a blood drive at Colonial Life in Columbia, SC every eight weeks. Thirty-three employees donated blood to the blood drive May 29.
