Obesity in the U.S. has reached a new-time high of 30%, according to new numbers from the Centers for Disease Control. The numbers come from an early release of findings from a National Health Interview Survey.
The balance between how many calories we consume and the energy we expend helps determine our weight. If we eat more calories than we burn, it’s inevitable that we will gain weight. That is why the most common causes of obesity are overeating and inactivity.
“Obesity can be a risk factor for major health problems but it can also make our day-to-day living a challenge as well,” said Takeela Belk, RN, with Colonial Life. “Obesity can cause several discomforts such as fatigue, increased sweating, and joint/back pain throughout the day. It can also be the source of sleep disturbances at night.”
Eating a well-balanced diet and exercising regularly are important elements of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and weight. The Mayo Clinic suggests these 5 steps to help:
- Exercise regularly. Whether it’s walking, running or swimming, moderately intense physical activity is important.
- Follow a healthy eating plan. Low-calories, nutrient foods such as fruit, vegetables and whole grains help promote a healthy diet.
- Know and avoid the food traps that cause you to eat. Be aware of the foods that trigger you to overeat. Keeping a journal is good way to identify these foods and then make a plan to stay in control of your eating habits.
- Monitor your weight regularly. Weighing yourself regularly can help you identify any small weight gains before they become problem.
- Be consistent. Like anything, commitment and perseverance are key. Stick to your health plan all the time – weekends, holidays and vacations.
